Old Jaffa – A walking tour
The Old City of Jaffa is one of the major tourists' hotspots in Israel, and surely one of Tel Aviv's most romantic spots. Visiting Old Jaffa is different than any other walking tour in Tel Aviv, and is surely one of the most inspiring and enjoyable routes throughout the city. Jaffa is one of the most ancient cities in the entire world, carrying more than 4,000 years of history. Because of the Jaffa port, which is one of the first known ports in the ancient world, dominating Old Jaffa was a strategic goal of many past empires, and each of them - Muslim, Greek, Roman or French – has left a mark on the city. These different influences are deeply felt while traveling the narrow lanes of the city and witnessing its unique charm. Nowadays these small arched alleys are filled with artists' quarters, studios and art galleries, as well as Judaica and jewelry shops.
The best way to start your Old Jaffa tour by foot is walking down the beach promenade southward from the lovely beaches of Tel Aviv. The first site of the old Jaffa port is phenomenal, including great views of the city and a beautiful authentic pier. From there, just walk up the stairs until you reach Kedumim Square, which is the center of the old city. In Kedumim Square you will find the ancient Jaffa museum and a useful tourist information center. If you are looking for a quiet hang out, right next to the square there is a small park with sculptures of Israeli artists and great views of the Mediterranean.
While visiting the Old city, be sure not to miss the Clock Square and the Clock Tower that were built in the beginning of the 20th century, and are located in the middle of the city center. Pay a visit to the nearby flea market, were small shops and stands offer just about everything you may want to take back home as a souvenir from this enchanting part of the city.
There are few ways for you to reach Old Jaffa from Adiv hotel Tel Aviv. The best way, as previously mentioned, is walking down the beach promenade southward, but you can easily reach there by Taxi (be sure to ask the driver to turn on the meter), and few buses stop very close to the clock tower, so you can start your tour there.
