Barbounia

Barbounia is an unpretentious fish and seafood restaurant, one that proves not every seafood restaurant must be expensive. This is the first of many seafood restaurants spread around the city which specializes in fixed-price meals served all day. Meals include a variety of mezes or appetizers from which you can eat as much as you want, and continue to a fish or seafood main course, all in very reasonable prices.

Barbounia is a very popular eatery of this sort. Its many appetizers include eggplant in mayonnaise, tahini, hummus, matboucha, coleslaw and more. These are served with bread and sometimes lemonade free of charge. Recommended dishes include shrimps in garlic, lemon and butter sauce, deep fried calamari and changing daily dishes written on the restaurant's blackboard. The restaurant derives its name from ubiquitous red mullet that swims the Mediterranean waters, so trying the well known fried 'Barbounia' there is quite remarkable.

If you still got room left for some sweets, try Barbounia's Bavaria, an originally German desert which was adapted as an Israeli common desert. The service in Barbounia is friendly and very efficient. Alcohol and beers are available.

The restaurant is located at a pleasant part of Ben Yehuda St., at the northern part of Tel Aviv. It is usually pretty crowded, especially during the weekend, but people tend to eat and move on, so the wait for your sit might only take couple of minutes.
